Word by word

with snakes (with venomous people)
do not keep company

Explanation

Do not keep company with snakes, that is, with venomous people. The company of those who are sweet outside and evil within slowly poisons us too.

Even a good person will lose his way by listening again and again to an evil counsellor. So we must take care whom we keep close to us.

Mahabharata, Sabha Parva

Shakuni's Counsel

From the Mahabharata, Sabha Parva. To Duryodhana, burning with envy at the Pandavas' wealth in Indraprastha, his uncle Shakuni spoke softly: "You cannot defeat them in battle. But I am a master of dice, and Yudhishthira loves the game but lacks the skill. Invite him to play, and all his wealth will be yours."

Vidura warned Dhritarashtra, "This will destroy the whole clan." But Duryodhana, long used to Shakuni's poisoned counsel, would not listen to the good.

All his life Duryodhana kept Shakuni at his side, and Shakuni's hand was in every evil scheme. The life of one who kept company with a snake ended by that very poison.
