Valmiki Ramayana, Uttara KandaKumbhakarna's Boon
From the Valmiki Ramayana, Uttara Kanda. Ravana and his brothers performed severe penance to Brahma. When Brahma came to grant boons, the gods were afraid: "If the giant Kumbhakarna gets a good boon, he will devour the world."
Brahma thought of Sarasvati, and she sat upon Kumbhakarna's tongue. Kumbhakarna opened his mouth and asked, "I wish to sleep for many years." Brahma said, "So be it."
When Sarasvati withdrew, Kumbhakarna realised that what he had said was not what he had meant to ask, and he grieved. But the spoken word could not be taken back. A single word spoken in error turned his whole life into sleep.
