Mahabharata, Adi ParvaKacha and the Sanjivani Vidya
From the Mahabharata, Adi Parva. Only Shukracharya, the guru of the asuras, possessed the Sanjivani vidya, the knowledge that restores the dead to life. To learn it, Kacha, son of Brihaspati the guru of the gods, went as a disciple to Shukra, who stood on the enemy's side.
For many years Kacha humbly served his teacher and his teacher's daughter Devayani. Fearing his purpose, the asuras killed him three times; each time, at Devayani's pleading, Shukra revived him. At last the asuras burned him to ashes and mixed them into Shukra's drink.
With no other way to revive Kacha, Shukra taught the Sanjivani vidya to Kacha himself, who was inside his belly. Kacha burst forth from his teacher's body and, with the knowledge he had learned, brought his teacher back to life. For one who loved learning, not even death was an obstacle.
