Srimad Bhagavatam, Tenth CantoKrishna Lifts Govardhana
From the Srimad Bhagavatam, Tenth Canto. Every year the people of Gokula held a sacrifice for Indra. The boy Krishna said, "Let us instead worship Mount Govardhana, which gives our cattle pasture and water, and the cows and the brahmins." The whole village came together and did so.
Angered, Indra sent seven days of ceaseless rain and storm. All of Gokula was about to be drowned in flood.
Krishna lifted Mount Govardhana like an umbrella on his little finger. Men, women, children, cows and calves all gathered together beneath it. After seven days, Indra admitted defeat. No storm could overcome a people who stood together as one village.
