Valmiki Ramayana, Bala KandaNarada Describes the Ideal Man
From the very beginning of the Valmiki Ramayana, Bala Kanda. The sage Valmiki asked Narada: "Who in this world today is virtuous, valiant, knows dharma, is grateful, truthful, firm in his vows, does good to all beings, and has conquered anger?"
Narada smiled and said: "It is rare for all the virtues you name to be found in one person. But Rama, born in the line of Ikshvaku, is such a one. He is deep as the ocean, steady as the Himalaya, patient as the earth."
Narada then told Rama's story in brief. From that question and answer, the Ramayana was born. To the question of who is the ideal person, a whole life became the answer.
