Taittiriya UpanishadBhrigu's Search, Step by Step
From the Taittiriya Upanishad. Bhrigu went to his father Varuna and asked, 'Teach me Brahman.' Varuna did not answer directly: 'That from which all beings are born, by which they live and into which they return: that is Brahman. Know it through austerity.'
Bhrigu practised austerity and concluded, 'Food is Brahman.' When he told his father, Varuna said, 'Practise more.' Again and again he practised, going deeper step by step: life-breath, mind, understanding.
At last he realised: 'Bliss is Brahman.' He heard the way the teaching pointed, tested it in his own life and reached the truth step by step.
