Atakkam utaiyaar arivilar enrennik / Katakkak karuthavum vaentaa - mataith thalaiyil / Oatumeen oata urumeen varumalavum / Vaati irukkumaam kokku

Meaning

Do not take the modest for fools and try to override them. At the sluice the crane lets the small fish run past and waits, as if drooping, until the big fish comes.

Explanation

A crane stands at the mouth of a sluice and does not stir as the small fish swim past. To an onlooker it seems tired and drooping. But when the big fish it wants arrives, it takes it in a single strike.

In the same way, says Avvaiyar, do not mistake the modest and quiet for fools and try to override or cheat them. Their stillness is not weakness but waiting for the right moment. They do not react to every small thing; they save their strength for what matters.

Underestimating the person who says little in meetings, or who does not answer every insult at once, can prove a costly mistake. Restraint and patience are signs of strength.

From the Mahabharata (Virata Parva)

Vallabha the Cook and Kichaka

From the Mahabharata. After twelve years of exile in the forest, the Pandavas had to live a thirteenth year unrecognised. They took refuge in disguise at the court of King Virata. Bhima, the mighty warrior, worked in the kitchen as a cook named Vallabha, and Draupadi served the queen as a maid called Sairandhri.

Kichaka, the queen's brother and commander of the army, harassed Sairandhri and insulted her openly in the court. Bhima burned with anger, but to reveal himself there would have broken their disguise, so he held his anger in check and stood still. Everyone in the palace took him for an ordinary cook.

That night Draupadi told Bhima of her suffering, and the two made a plan. She asked Kichaka to come to the dance hall after dark. Bhima waited there in the shadows, fought Kichaka when he came, and destroyed him.

The crane that seemed to droop was waiting for the right fish. Kichaka, who took the quiet cook for a nobody, paid dearly for that mistake.
