Explanation

However vast the sea, and however deep you press a measuring vessel into it, it will scoop up only one measure of water, never four. The vessel's own capacity is its limit.

The verse is framed as advice to a woman friend: 'Even with wealth and a good husband, each receives joy only in the measure of her destiny.' However many opportunities lie around us, what we receive matches the capacity of our karma.

This need not be a gloomy thought. It guides us to stop grieving by comparing ourselves with others, to find contentment in what we have, and to widen our own vessel through good deeds.

From the Mahabharata

The Life of Draupadi

From the Mahabharata. Draupadi arose from the sacrificial fire of King Drupada of Panchala, matchless in beauty and wisdom. After Arjuna won her at the svayamvara, she became the wife of all five Pandavas. Her husbands were the greatest warriors of the age, and she was queen in the wondrous palace of Indraprastha. Everyone thought her blessed with both wealth and husbands in full.

Yet when Yudhishthira lost everything at dice, she too was staked and lost. In the Kaurava court Dushasana dragged at her garment, while her five heroic husbands stood bound by their word, heads bowed. She cried out to Krishna, and by his grace her garment grew without end and her honour was saved.

Even after that, her life was a long trial: twelve years of exile, a year in hiding as a maid, and the grief of losing all five of her sons in the war.

Draupadi's life bears out Avvaiyar's words: even with wealth and husbands, each receives what destiny holds. Her one unfailing support through it all was her faith in God.

To reflect on

Have you ever envied someone who seemed to have everything? What might they have been carrying inside?
