Explanation

This verse shows four forms of insecurity. People who live under a cruel king live in fear every day. One who swims deep water without a float may go under at any moment. Both share the same feeling: there is nowhere to set one's feet.

The third line is about the company of harsh-tongued people. Around them the mind is gnawed by the tension of waiting for the next stinging word. The fourth line names the result of all this: a life that wavers and has no footing. Fear from outside seeps inward until the mind itself is shaken.

Yet there is a remedy. The Puranas show that those who held fast to faith in God, as to a raft, did not drown even in the midst of tyranny. If we find ourselves among harsh words today, the courage to step away, a faith that steadies the mind, and good companions can be our float.

From the Srimad Bhagavatam

Prahlada's Faith

From the Srimad Bhagavatam. The demon king Hiranyakashipu ruled the three worlds with a crooked sceptre. "I alone am God," he decreed. "No one shall worship anyone but me." Yet his own son Prahlada had been a devotee of Narayana since childhood.

At school his teachers tried to train him in statecraft, but he taught his classmates instead: "Remember Narayana; he dwells in every being." His furious father threatened him with harsh words, and still the boy did not waver. Then the king had him thrown among serpents, trampled by elephants, hurled from a cliff, bound and cast into the sea, and placed in fire. Each time Prahlada called on Narayana and was saved.

At last Hiranyakashipu demanded, "Where is your Narayana? Is he in this pillar?" and struck it. "He is everywhere," said Prahlada. From the pillar burst Narasimha, who destroyed the tyrant at twilight, on the threshold, upon his lap. When his fury subsided, the Lord embraced Prahlada with love and made him king.

To live under tyranny is a great sorrow. But the boy who held on to faith as his raft did not drown, even in the deepest sea.

To reflect on

When life feels unsteady, what do you hold on to as your raft?
