Explanation

The last verse of the chapter is thought-provoking. Aranvaraiyaan alla seyinum means 'even if he does other wrongs, not respecting the bounds of dharma'. Valluvar pleads that even if a man indulges in many other faults, at least in this one let him not fail. This is not permission for the faults. It is the strongest way of saying how important this one boundary is. Some read it as a minimum expectation: even if a person has not reformed fully, let him keep at least this.

Piranvaraiyaal is understood by commentators as one fenced round by another, that is, bound by marriage to someone else. The word nandru, 'good', is gentle here, and the sense is that this is a most basic good. It seems that Valluvar speaks here more in a pleading voice than in a commanding one.

In life we may sometimes fail to reach complete conduct. But some boundaries are so important that keeping them keeps the trust of society. Even a man with many faults will not be wholly despised if he respects the sanctity of other people's families. The essence of the verse is that at the very least this boundary must be kept. It is also a hopeful teaching, for it suggests that a person who keeps even one great line will find it easier to return to the others. Better one boundary kept than none.

A story

Ravana's Last Boundary

This is a traditional account told in the Uttara Kanda and Yuddha Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana. Ravana committed many wrongs. He conquered and imprisoned the gods, disrupted the sacrifices of sages and seized other kingdoms. People feared him as the lord of the rakshasas. Yet the Purana says there was one boundary that held him.

Once, near Mount Kailasa, Ravana saw the celestial dancer Rambha, who was to be wedded to Nalakubara, son of Kubera. Driven by desire, he forced himself on her. Rambha told Nalakubara what had happened. In anger Nalakubara cursed him: "If Ravana ever forces an unwilling woman again, his head will burst into a hundred pieces."

The fear of that curse, the story says, held Ravana back. So even after carrying Sita away, he could not touch her. He kept her under guard in the Ashoka grove and pleaded for her consent. She remained there for ten months. Her chastity, her firmness and her love for Rama protected her.

When Hanuman found Sita, she was in sorrow but pure. After Ravana fell in the war, this one boundary added no further blame to his name. His not touching Sita stands as the only slight consolation amid his many crimes.

However many bounds of dharma one breaks, it is good not to break this one: the Purana itself bears witness to Valluvar's thought. It does not excuse Ravana's other faults, but it shows how crucial this line was.

However imperfect I am, which one boundary can I resolve never to cross?
