Explanation

The word elidhena carries a heavy message. People who commit this fault generally go in thinking, 'It is easy, no one will know, nothing will happen.' But ease of opportunity does not make an act right. The path that looks easiest is often the edge of a pit. Valluvar speaks of vili yaadhu nirkum pazhi, blame that does not die. Other kinds of blame may fade with time, but this does not; it clings to the man's name even after his death.

There is a further subtlety: others may forget but his own mind does not. Egnyaandrum means at all times. However much a person reforms and however many years pass, the act remains a memory. The blame reaches his family as well, and even his children's names may be stained. So the price of a small desire runs through the whole of life.

Today the easy opportunities of the internet foster this sense of 'it is easy'. Things people think they do in secret become public, recorded and permanent. The verse warns us not to take ease alone as a measure of what we do, but to take rightness as the measure. If a thing is easy and wrong, its ease is not a permission but a trap, and the wise recognise the trap precisely by how smoothly the path seems to run.

A story

Keechaka

This is the story of Keechaka from the Virata Parva of the Mahabharata. After twelve years of exile in the forest the Pandavas lived a year incognito. That year they lived in the palace of King Virata in various disguises. Draupadi served as Sairandhri, maidservant of Queen Sudeshna.

The queen's brother and commander of the army, Keechaka, was immensely strong. One day he saw Sairandhri and was infatuated. "This servant will easily come to my hand," he thought. With the help of Sudeshna he approached her. Sairandhri firmly refused. "My husbands are gandharvas; they will destroy you," she warned. Keechaka paid no heed.

One day in the court he insulted her and kicked her. Yudhishthira and Bhima, present there, restrained their anger to keep their disguise. That night Draupadi went to Bhima and told him what had happened. Bhima devised a plan.

The next day Draupadi told Keechaka to meet her at night in the dance hall. Delighted, he went. Bhima waited in the dark. A fierce fight followed, and the Mahabharata says Keechaka died there. The next morning the people saw his body mangled and were terrified.

Keechaka was a great warrior, a commander, and the queen's brother. But because he thought it easy to violate a woman's honour, he lost his life and his name. His name is still remembered with blame.
