Explanation

The word peraanmai gives this verse its life. Aanmai commonly suggests strength and valour. But Valluvar says the greatest manliness lies not in defeating an enemy but in conquering oneself. Not looking at another man's wife is not just a matter of glance; it is a discipline of mind. Eyes see of their own accord, but the mind must have the strength to govern them, and that is what he calls manliness.

The turn of phrase aranondro is subtle. 'Is it merely virtue?' means it is more than that. Some take the sense as: for the wise this is not just virtue but the full completeness of conduct. Others take it as: it is not one part of virtue but virtue and conduct together at their fullest. Either way, this quality stands higher than ordinary virtue.

In the modern world many who talk of strength show physical power or money power. But keeping one's eyes and thoughts respectful is a rarer strength. A society in which women can move without fear needs men with this great manliness. Home, street and workplace become safe because of them. It is a kind of strength that leaves no mark on anyone, which is perhaps why it is so seldom praised. Valluvar names it so that we may notice it, honour it and teach it to our sons.

A story

Arjuna and Urvashi

This story comes from the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata. During the exile, after winning the Pashupata weapon from Shiva, Arjuna went to heaven at Indra's invitation. He stayed in Indra's palace and learnt music and dance from the gandharva Chitrasena. The gods honoured him, and as Indra's son he was given a high seat in Indra's assembly.

One day Indra, wishing to please Arjuna, sent the celestial dancer Urvashi to him. Urvashi was exceedingly beautiful. At night she came to Arjuna's chamber adorned. "I desire you. Indra has agreed to this," she said.

Arjuna rose, bowed to her and said, "Lady, you were the wife of Pururavas, the ancestor of our Kuru line. So you are like a mother of our family. Like Kunti, Madri and Indrani, you are a mother worthy of my reverence." Urvashi became furious. "Celestial women are not bound by austerities; it is the custom that whoever comes here accepts us. You have insulted me."

Arjuna did not change his stand. Humbly but firmly he refused. In her anger Urvashi cursed him: "You will live for a year among women, unmanly." The curse brought him distress, but tradition says Indra softened it so that it would take effect only during the year of incognito. So in Virata's kingdom Arjuna lived disguised as Brihannala.

Accepting the curse and its pain, Arjuna kept his conduct with great manliness. He stands out among the Pandavas not only by valour but by restraint.
