From the Mahabharata (Udyoga Parva)The Meal at Vidura's House
From the Mahabharata. When Krishna came to Hastinapura as envoy of peace, Duryodhana planned to win him over. He arranged a great banquet in the palace, put up decorated pavilions all along the road and kept costly gifts ready. His plan was simple: if Krishna could be drawn to his side, the Pandavas would be left alone.
Krishna came to the palace and paid his respects to the elders. When Duryodhana invited him to the feast, he quietly declined: "One eats at another's house either out of love or out of need. There is no love for me in your heart, and I have no hunger that needs it. You who hate the Pandavas hate me too. I will not take your food."
Then Krishna went to Vidura's simple home. Though Vidura held a high place at court, he lived simply and righteously, owing nothing to anyone. When he and his wife saw Krishna at their door they were overcome with joy, and they served him with love the plain food that was in the house. Krishna ate that simple meal with more delight than any palace banquet.
A simple life free of debt, and the wisdom to keep away from the lavishness of the mean-hearted, are sweet in every way; God himself sought out that humble home.
