Explanation

The structure of this verse recalls verse 136 in the chapter on decorum. There Valluvar said the resolute do not lapse from conduct because they know the suffering a lapse brings; here he gives the same reason for not doing wrong out of envy. Allavai are improper acts: casting false blame on others, deceiving, obstructing, harming. When envy lives in the heart it urges such acts. But the wise, knowing their consequences, do not commit them.

Knowledge works here as a guard. That envy arises is natural; acting on it is a choice. To feel 'I am envious' is no fault, but if one gives it room and acts, the edham, the suffering that follows, is great. A rumour that spoils another's name, a scheme that blocks another's chance, an act that steals another's work: the first to be hurt by these is the doer himself.

In offices today we see people who, irritated by a colleague's success, lodge false complaints. In a short time the truth emerges and they lose credibility. So the sensible person is the one who, when envy arises, picks creative effort as its outlet. The habit of thinking through the consequence before a wrong act is what Valluvar teaches here. The feeling can be allowed to pass like weather; only the action has to be answered for.

A story

Vidura's Counsel

This scene comes from the Sabha Parva and the Udyoga Parva (the Vidura Niti portion) of the Mahabharata. Returning to Hastinapura after seeing the prosperity of the Pandavas at Indraprastha and the fame of the Rajasuya, Duryodhana was seething. He lamented to his father Dhritarashtra, "My eyes burn at the sight of the Pandavas' wealth. I must somehow bring them down." Shakuni suggested defeating them through a game of dice.

Vidura, minister and brother of Dhritarashtra, learned of it and was deeply troubled. He went to Dhritarashtra and said, "King, this game will ruin our family. A decision born of envy is against dharma, and the harm that follows will be very great." He spoke directly to Duryodhana too: "You are well placed. Why do you burn at another's wealth? That very envy will destroy you."

Vidura gave his famous counsel. "One who abandons dharma on the advice of the wicked will repent later. Acts done in anger and envy return as a fire that burns the doer." But Dhritarashtra, out of love for his son, did not accept Vidura's advice.

The game took place. The Pandavas lost, and Draupadi was humiliated in the assembly. Vidura protested in the hall itself. Because he knew beforehand the results of such acts, he never took part in the wrongdoing.

In the end, in the war at Kurukshetra, Duryodhana and his brothers perished. What Vidura warned of came to pass. His life stands as an example that one who knows the evil of acts born of envy will not do them.

To reflect on

What do I do in the moment envy rises, to stop myself before I act?
