Explanation

Vizhupperu means the best gain, a fortune worthy of honour. Men count many things as gains: wealth, fame, position, learning. But Valluvar says the finest gain of all is a mind free of envy toward anyone. The word yaarmaattum, 'toward anyone', is important. It means not only friends, relatives and neighbours but even enemies. It is a kind of freedom of mind.

Why does he call it the greatest gain? The envious man suffers every day at the progress of others. Thousands are rising in the world, and if each one's progress gives him pain, his whole life passes in pain. For one without envy, each person's success is a joy. Commentators explain it as a state in which the mind becomes pure. It cannot be bought with any material wealth.

We can taste its value in daily life. At a function, a man who can enjoy the sight of everyone well dressed without irritation enjoys the whole event. For one who goes on comparing himself with others, every function is a burden. So this gain is one we should strive to obtain. It does not depend on luck or inheritance; it comes from a decision to look at others with goodwill, repeated until it becomes the shape of the mind.

A story

Kuchela and Krishna

This is the story of Kuchela, also known as Sudama, told in the Bhagavata Purana. Sudama was Krishna's friend and fellow student in the gurukulam of the sage Sandipani. After their studies Krishna became king of Dvaraka. Sudama lived as a poor Brahmin, with a wife and many children and often without food. Yet he never complained.

One day his wife said, "Is your friend not the king of Dvaraka? Go and ask for his help." Sudama hesitated. He was embarrassed to stretch out his hand to a friend. But at his wife's insistence he set out. The gift he carried for Krishna was a handful of flattened rice that his wife had begged from neighbouring houses.

What he saw in Dvaraka astonished him: golden palaces, rows of elephants, wealth beyond count. Yet no irritation rose in Sudama's mind. "I am glad my friend has risen so high," he thought. The guards at the palace gate hesitated to let him in; when he said Krishna's name, word was sent.

Hearing it, Krishna ran and embraced him. He seated him on his silken bed. With Rukmini he washed his feet. When he saw the rice, he took it eagerly and ate. The Purana says that with the first mouthful he removed all of Sudama's poverty. When he took the second, Rukmini stopped him.

While there, Sudama asked for no boon and did not speak of his poverty. Only on the way back did he realise, "I asked for nothing." But when he reached home, a beautiful mansion stood where his hut had been.

The mind that felt no envy at another's wealth was the greatest gain he received. The mansion was only its outward form.
