Explanation

This verse states a subtle truth. Enemies need not harm us; our own envy is enough to destroy us. The phrase onnaar vazhukkiyum kedu eenbadhu has two readings. One is that even if enemies do not harm him, even by slip, his envy will bring him ruin. The other is that his enemies would never do him good even by slip, so his ruin is certain through his envy. In both, the thought is the same: envy itself acts as the enemy.

How does envy destroy by itself? First it destroys peace of mind. Sleep does not come at night, and attention scatters by day. Then it destroys relationships; friends gradually distance themselves from the envious. Then it destroys efficiency, since energy goes to others' fall instead of one's own growth. In this way, without any enemy arriving, envy eats away a person from within, like termites in timber.

We can see it easily in life. A man who watches the neighbour's progress every day and grieves loses the happiness of his own house. The neighbour's wealth does him no harm, but his own envy tortures him. The message here is that your enemies are not outside; they are within. Once this is understood, the work of defence shifts from watching other people to tending our own heart, which is a task entirely within our power.

A story

Shurpanakha's Downfall

This is the story of Shurpanakha from the Aranya Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana. When Ravana's sister Shurpanakha came to Rama's hut at Panchavati she was smitten by Rama's beauty. She told Rama and Lakshmana of her desire, and both refused. Then her eyes fell on Sita, sitting at the door of the hut.

She looked at Sita. Sita's beauty and Rama's love for her stirred an irritation she could not bear. "If this woman were not here, Rama would love me," she thought. Envy veiled her mind. She sprang at Sita, trying to devour her.

Lakshmana at once drew his sword and cut off Shurpanakha's nose and ears. Streaming blood, she ran screaming to Khara. Khara, Dushana and Trishira came with a great army to fight Rama. Valmiki writes that Rama alone destroyed fourteen thousand rakshasas.

In shame and burning, Shurpanakha went to Ravana, exaggerated Sita's beauty and urged him to seize her. Though she knew harm would come to her own brother, the envy and thirst for revenge in her heart pushed her to do so. As a result Ravana carried off Sita, and the war of the Ramayana began.

Neither Rama nor Sita had done Shurpanakha any harm. Her own envy cast her into humiliation and then into the destruction of her family. The story is an example of the verse: for the envious, envy is enough.
