Explanation

In this verse Valluvar personifies envy as 'a sinner'. The phrase azhukkaaru ena oru paavi seems to place before us a distinct villain. He does two things. First, thirucchetru: he destroys fortune and prosperity. Then, theeyuzhi uyththu vidum: he leads one into an evil place and state. Some commentators take theeyuzhi as hell, others as an evil path or ruined condition. Both readings fit.

Notice that wealth is destroyed first. Envy does not directly create poverty, but it destroys good relations, peace of mind and efficiency. When those are gone, wealth goes too. Then it drives a man toward evil ways. The envious man begins to use deceit, lies and scheming to block others' progress. It is thus a slippery slope.

We see small forms of this today. Burning at someone's good life and speaking ill of him online is the first step. The next is a false complaint. The third is a plot. At the end of this slide he stands having lost his name and his peace. It is therefore better to drive this sinner out at the first step. The image of a person, not a feeling, also helps: envy is a tenant who must be asked to leave early, before he has started rearranging the furniture.

A story

Hiranyakashipu's Envy

This is the story of Hiranyakashipu from the Bhagavata Purana. Hiranyakashipu was king of the asuras. His brother Hiranyaksha had been slain by Vishnu in the Varaha incarnation, and thus Hiranyakashipu hated Vishnu. He performed austerities and got a boon from Brahma: he could not be killed by man or beast, by day or night, indoors or outdoors, or by any weapon. With this boon he conquered the three worlds and made the devas tremble.

Hiranyakashipu declared that he himself was God. He ordered that no one in the world should worship Vishnu. He wanted everyone to worship him alone. His mind burned with envy that another should receive worship. He boiled to see sacrifices for Vishnu or temples rising for him.

At the height of this envy, he went wild with rage when his own son Prahlada worshipped Vishnu. He tried many ways to kill his son, none of which succeeded. At last, pointing to a pillar, he asked mockingly, "Is your Vishnu in this?" and kicked the pillar.

From the pillar Vishnu emerged as Narasimha. He was neither man nor beast; the twilight hour was neither day nor night; the threshold was neither indoors nor outdoors; his claws were not weapons. Thus without breaking any condition of the boon, he laid Hiranyakashipu on his lap and tore him apart with his claws.

The king of the three worlds lost his wealth, his son and his life through a single envy. The story shows that envy drove him into the evil abyss.
