Explanation

This is the verse at the end of the work telling its fruit. Learning even one verse removes fear, it says. Even today many memorise Alankaram verses like 'Naal en seyyum' for courage.

From the Periya Puranam, the life of Thirunavukkarasar

Appar before the mad elephant

When Thirunavukkarasar returned to Shaivism, the Pallava king punished him in many ways: shut him in a lime kiln, fed him poisoned food, set a mad elephant on him. As the elephant came, Appar sang 'Sunna ven santhana saanthum', declaring 'there is nothing to fear'. The elephant circled him, bowed and left. At last they tied him to a stone and threw him into the sea; as he sang 'Namasivaya', the stone floated like a raft. He feared neither king nor elephant.
