Navaratri and Vijayadasami traditionThe First Letter Written in Rice
From the traditions of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Of the nine nights of Navaratri, tradition gives the first three to Durga, the next three to Lakshmi and the last three to Saraswathi. The ninth day is Saraswathi Puja. Books, musical instruments and the tools of every trade are placed before the Goddess. No one studies that day; even the tools rest.
The next day is Vijayadasami. In the morning the books are taken up again, and this is the day of Vidyarambham, the beginning of learning. Little children are seated on an elder's lap, and holding their finger, the elder helps them write their first letter in rice spread on a plate: 'a', the first letter of the alphabet, or 'Hari Sri'. Some families also trace a letter on the child's tongue with a gold ring. In temples and homes hundreds of children begin their learning on that day.
Rice is food; the letter is knowledge. Before the 'Mother who gave birth to all the worlds', who feeds both body and spirit, the child writes its first letter, and every form of the Goddess praised in this verse comes together in that one moment.
