Meaning

Lady! If anyone so much as says 'Kurugur, on the Porunai where the waves dash', your daughter's eyes fill with tears; her hands join above her head; her heart melts. He protected the world with his poetry and ended the karma that torments it. Not only the magizh flowers he wears; your daughter's heart longs to carry the magizh tree itself upon her head!

Explanation

This is a lovely exaggeration. To wear on one's head the magizh flowers the Alvar wore makes sense. But she wants to carry the whole tree on her head! Anything linked with the beloved becomes holy.

Three signs are named: tears, joined hands and a melting heart. All of them come at the sound of a single word, 'Kurugur'.

Valmiki Ramayana, Ayodhya Kanda

Bharata Carries the Sandals on His Head

From the Valmiki Ramayana. Learning that Rama had gone to the forest, Bharata went in grief to Chitrakuta. 'Brother, return to Ayodhya and rule,' he begged. Rama refused to go against his father's word.

Then Bharata asked: 'Then give me your sandals. Let them rule.' Rama stepped onto his golden sandals and gave them to Bharata. Bharata bowed to them, placed them on his head, and carried them back towards Ayodhya.

He did not enter Ayodhya. At Nandigrama he placed the sandals on the throne, and for fourteen years, dressed in bark, he ruled the land in their name. Every command was laid before the sandals before it was carried out. This is carrying on one's head the very thing the beloved's feet have touched. Kambar's heroine longs to carry the magizh tree on her head out of the same love.
