Valmiki Ramayana, Ayodhya KandaBharata Carries the Sandals on His Head
From the Valmiki Ramayana. Learning that Rama had gone to the forest, Bharata went in grief to Chitrakuta. 'Brother, return to Ayodhya and rule,' he begged. Rama refused to go against his father's word.
Then Bharata asked: 'Then give me your sandals. Let them rule.' Rama stepped onto his golden sandals and gave them to Bharata. Bharata bowed to them, placed them on his head, and carried them back towards Ayodhya.
He did not enter Ayodhya. At Nandigrama he placed the sandals on the throne, and for fourteen years, dressed in bark, he ruled the land in their name. Every command was laid before the sandals before it was carried out. This is carrying on one's head the very thing the beloved's feet have touched. Kambar's heroine longs to carry the magizh tree on her head out of the same love.
