Vinayaka Chaturthi tradition (Ganesha Purana tradition)The Night the Moon Laughed
A Vinayaka Chaturthi story. One Chaturthi night, Ganesha had eaten His fill of the modakas His devotees had lovingly offered, and was riding home on His mouse. On the way the mouse saw a snake, took fright and stumbled. Ganesha fell; His belly burst and the modakas scattered. He picked up that very snake and tied it around His belly as a belt.
The moon, watching from the sky, laughed mockingly, proud of his own beauty. Ganesha grew angry and cursed him: 'You are proud of your beauty. From now on no one will wish to look at you.' The moon's light faded and the nights of the world went dark.
The moon understood his mistake, repented and bowed to Ganesha. In His compassion Ganesha softened the curse: 'You will wax and you will wane. But whoever looks at you on the night of Vinayaka Chaturthi alone will bear a false blame.' That is why, even today, tradition says not to look at the moon on that night.
The Agaval says He 'told me of the nature of the friend of the water lily'. Ganesha knows the moon's nature, even its waxing and waning. It is He who makes known the moon within the body too.
