Explanation

The 'three regions' are the regions of fire, sun and moon described in the yoga texts. The 'pillar' running through them is the spine. At its base, coiled and asleep, lies the serpent power, kundalini. Avvaiyar's 'serpent that rises' is that power waking and rising upward.

'Ajapa' is the mantra that happens naturally with the breath, without being spoken. Yoga tradition holds that as the breath goes in and out, the sound 'hamsa' arises of itself. Every living being repeats it all day without knowing. When the guru makes it known, it becomes 'the mantra that bursts forth'.

The Ganapati Atharvashirsha praises Ganesha with the words 'You dwell eternally in the muladhara.' Raising the fire of the muladhara 'by kaal', by the breath, is the aim of pranayama. In Tamil 'kaal' can mean wind or air; the southern breeze is called 'thenkaal'.

Ganesha Purana tradition

The Fire Demon and the Arugu Grass

From the Ganesha Purana tradition. The demon Analasura was made of fire. Flames poured from his eyes. Wherever he walked, everything burned to ash. Unable to bear him, the gods and sages took refuge in Ganesha.

Ganesha took on a huge form and stood before Analasura. The demon hurled all his fire at Him. Ganesha was not afraid. He swallowed that fire demon whole. The world was saved.

But the fire He had swallowed went on burning inside His belly. The moon gave its cool light; Varuna poured down water; nothing eased the heat. Then some sages lovingly placed twenty-one bunches of arugu grass on His head. At once the terrible heat was soothed.

From that day the plain arugu grass has been Ganesha's favourite offering. He is the Lord who rules the fire that rises in the muladhara, and what cools that fire is not a great gift but simple love.

To reflect on

What is the simple 'arugu grass' that cools the fire of anger or worry inside you: a deep breath, a holy name, a friend?
