Explanation

This couplet places truth highest among the virtues. "Speaking truth in agreement with the mind" means saying with the mouth exactly what the mind holds, without falsehood. Valluvar says such a person is superior even to those who combine penance with charity. Penance and charity are the high acts of the ascetic and householder paths respectively. Truth stands above both.

The word manaththodu, "with the mind", is important. This is truth in which not just word and deed but mind joins. Mere spoken truth is not elevated; the truth that comes from the depth of the mind is. That is why it surpasses penance and giving.

We find the same idea elsewhere in our tradition. In the Mahabharata, Shakuntala tells Dushyanta that if a thousand Ashvamedha sacrifices and truth were placed in a balance, truth would weigh more. Valluvar uses the same logic. Penance and charity are outward acts; truth is inner strength.

In practice, however much a person gives, if his word is untrustworthy his standing falls. By contrast, a poor man without wealth but with truth earns the respect of people. The verse also gives hope: anyone can rise through truth.

Valluvar does not reject penance or charity; he compares them with truth. Penance and charity need a person's strength and wealth, while truth asks only for his mind and word. It is therefore an excellence within every person's reach.

A story

Shakuntala's Scales

The story of Shakuntala occurs in the Adi Parva of the Mahabharata. Shakuntala, raised in the hermitage of the sage Kanva, was seen and loved by King Dushyanta, who had come hunting. They married in the Gandharva fashion. Dushyanta returned to his capital, promising to send for her soon. A son, Bharata, was born to them.

Years passed and the king did not send for her, so Shakuntala went to court with her son. The Mahabharata says Dushyanta, though he recognised her, pretended not to and denied her. Stung by the insult, Shakuntala stood in the assembly and advised the king. Her words sing the greatness of truth.

She said: "O king, if a thousand Ashvamedha sacrifices and a single truth were placed in a scale, truth would weigh more. There is no penance equal to truth, and no sin greater than falsehood. You know the truth of your own mind; the witness seated in your heart knows you. If you lie, you disgrace yourself." Her words quieted the whole assembly.

Then a voice from the sky declared: "Shakuntala speaks the truth; this boy is your son." Dushyanta accepted her, saying he had acted so only to remove the people's doubt. So truth itself brought her victory. Bharata later became a famed emperor of the land.

The story illustrates the couplet "One who speaks truth with his mind is superior to those who practise penance and charity." Shakuntala had neither wealth nor army, but she had truth. That raised her before a great emperor. The episode shows truth as a strength beyond penance, charity and sacrifice.
