Veracity · Vaaimai

This chapter teaches that truth is speech that harms no one, and that never lying against one's own conscience brings dharma, fame, inner purity and light, so that nothing is better than truthfulness.

Introduction

Vaaymai means the truth of the mouth, that is, truthfulness of speech. In the section on ascetic virtue this chapter follows compassion, non-stealing and the warning against pretence. Speaking the truth is not a rule for renunciates alone, but the ascetic life practises it fully. In Indian tradition the word satya is honoured as the foundation of dharma. The Mundaka Upanishad line "satyameva jayate" is today also the motto of our country. Valluvar states the same truth in Tamil, simply and deeply.

The very first couplet gives a definition: truth is speaking words free of any harm. It is not enough to report what happened as it happened; the word must not injure anyone. The second couplet extends this by saying that even a lie, if it brings a flawless good, may be counted in the place of truth. Commentators explain this couplet in different ways, and we will take that up below.

Tradition views truthfulness broadly. The Manusmriti, the Mahabharata and the Ramayana count satya as the highest austerity. "Satyam vada, dharmam chara", "speak the truth, walk in dharma", is the Taittiriya Upanishad's charge to the student. Valluvar teaches the same path, but his definition is slightly fresh: truth is not merely reporting facts but also speech that does not wound. Even a hard truth should therefore be learned to be spoken with care and affection.

In the third couplet Valluvar sets conscience as the witness. If we lie, even if no one else knows, our own heart knows, and that heart will burn us. The fourth says one who lives without lying in the mind finds a place within the hearts of all people. The fifth and sixth compare truthfulness with austerity, charity and fame. The seventh raises it so high that not lying alone might replace other virtues. The eighth names water for outer purity and truth for inner purity. The ninth calls truth a lamp, and the tenth closes by saying nothing better has been seen in the world.

In today's world information spreads easily, and falsehood spreads just as easily. A chapter on truthfulness is needed now more than ever. The words we speak, the messages we forward and the opinions we share can all be measured by this standard. As we read these couplets we can set our words and our minds right together. In this way the chapter is both a firm discipline and a clear guide to living.

Chapter story

The Truth of Harishchandra

Harishchandra is the king honoured in Indian tradition as the emblem of truthfulness. His story is told in the Puranas, including the Markandeya Purana, and was later expanded in plays and tales. Harishchandra of the solar line, king of Ayodhya, was famed as one who never lied. The Purana says the sage Vishvamitra decided to test his truthfulness.

In a dream Harishchandra saw himself giving his kingdom to the sage. The next day, when the sage arrived and asked for that gift, he did not refuse; a word spoken even in a dream was a word, and he handed over the kingdom. When the customary fee for the gift was demanded, he had nothing. He sold his wife Chandramati and his son Rohitashva, and at last sold himself to a keeper of a cremation ground.

At the cremation ground his work was to collect a fee from those who brought bodies to burn. One day Chandramati came there to cremate their son, who had died of a snake bite. She too had no fee. Harishchandra, in keeping with his duty, had to ask even his wife. When she tried to offer part of her cloth, he did not hesitate to accept it. He put his own feeling second to duty and truth.

The turning point of the tale is the cremation ground scene. It may seem harsh that Harishchandra asked his own wife for the fee, but his truthfulness lay in not changing his duty and his word, however close the relationship. He put his grief aside before the promise he had given his master. Anyone will keep their word when it is easy; one who keeps it in an hour of sorrow is the truthful one.

Modern thinkers also debate this story. Some ask whether a man should keep his word even to the extent of selling his family. Tradition treats it as a case belonging to the special position of a king, who gave up the wealth and office he had received for the sake of his word. What we should take from it is not the scale of his loss but the pure resolve that gives a word its value. That resolve begins with keeping the small promises of ordinary days.

At the end of the trial the gods appeared. Vishvamitra ended the test, Rohitashva was restored to life, and Harishchandra received back his kingdom and family. Details vary among tellings, but the essence is one: if a man is ready to lose everything to keep his word, in the end he loses nothing.

For many children in Bharat this tale was the first lesson in truth. Seen beside the couplet "Truth is the speaking of words free of any harm", we notice that Harishchandra's word harmed nobody; it brought pain only to himself. He took upon himself the suffering of guarding the truth.

Mahatma Gandhi writes in his autobiography that as a boy he was deeply moved by a play about Harishchandra and asked himself again and again why everyone should not be truthful like Harishchandra. In this way one story crossed generations and shaped the life purpose of a great man.
