Explanation

The final couplet of the chapter becomes Valluvar's personal testimony. Yaam meiyaak kandavatrul means "among the things we have truly known and experienced". Among them he firmly says there is nothing better than truthfulness. The plural "we" may present Valluvar's own experience, or may stand for the view of all the noble ones.

The couplet reads like a closing statement. Earlier verses gave the definition, benefit, greatness and light of truth. Here Valluvar sums up everything and gives a verdict: "Of what I have seen, this is best." He has seen learning, wealth, fame, penance and charity, and beyond all of them truth stands.

The word mei in meiyaa kandavai is also significant. Mei means both "truth" and "body". It can be read as one who has known truth by living it with the body. Commentators say "among the truths we have found through study and experience".

The message for us: when many desires pull us in life, we need clarity about what matters. Like Valluvar, we can hold firmly to one thing we know by experience. If that one thing is truth, our life is stable. All that we have learned ends, in the end, in truth. Hence all the moral tales we meet point in the end to the height of truth, and Valluvar seals the chapter with that.

A story

King Shibi's Vow

The Vana Parva of the Mahabharata tells of King Shibi. In Tamil tradition too, Shibi Chola is famed; many works such as the Silappadikaram and the Purananuru sing of him as the king who cut his own flesh for the sake of a dove. The Bharata presents the tale as an event in which Indra and Agni came to test his truthfulness.

One day, while Shibi sat in his court, a dove fell into his lap. Chased by a hawk, it trembled with fear for its life. "O king, protect me," it sought refuge. Shibi stroked it lovingly and said, "I will not abandon you." Then the hawk arrived and said, "This dove is my food; give it to me."

Shibi refused. "My word is that I will not abandon one who has taken refuge; to break it is not dharma." The hawk argued, "If you protect the dove, I will die of hunger. Is that not injustice too?" Shibi said, "I will give flesh from my body equal to the weight of the dove."

A balance was brought. On one pan was the dove; on the other Shibi cut and placed his flesh. However much he placed, the dove's pan stayed lower. At last Shibi himself climbed onto the pan. Then the dove and hawk took the forms of Indra and Agni. They praised his truthfulness and compassion and restored his body.

The story illustrates the couplet, "Of all that we have truly seen, nothing is better than truth." His body and kingdom were not great to Shibi; the word he had given was. He was ready to lose himself to keep it. Only one who held truth above all received the gods' testimony.
