Explanation

This couplet places before us a scene that signals death. It was observed in those days that at the point of death the tongue stiffens and hiccups rise in the throat. Once that state comes, nothing can be done. Before that, while the body has strength and the mind has resolve, the couplet calls us to do the good deed.

The phrase "mersendru seyyappadum" shows eagerness and haste. Some read it as "should be done by going out to it", meaning that we should not wait for the chance to come to us but seek out the good ourselves. Both readings strengthen the central message.

The mind offers many reasons for putting off good deeds: no money now, no time, let us finish family duties first, it can be done in old age. But it is not certain that old age will come. Even if it does, no one knows whether the body will then cooperate.

We may take this couplet not as a frightening phrase but as a call that points to the worth of life. One who knows that death is certain will use every moment of life for good.

One may ask what "nalvinai" is here. Commentators generally explain it as acts of virtue, and some as spiritual acts such as worship. Valluvar does not define any one thing, so it is fitting to take it that helping others, doing charity, worship and showing love are all included.

The word "vaaraamun", before it comes, sums up the warning. After it comes, there is no time; only before it comes is there a chance. This one word carries the whole urgency of the couplet.

A story

Parikshit's Seven Days

The first and ninth books of the Bhagavata Purana speak of King Parikshit. A grandson of Arjuna, he ruled with dharma. One day, hunting, he reached the ashram of a sage named Shamika, tired and thirsty. The sage sat in silent meditation. Getting no reply, the king grew angry and, tradition says, placed a dead snake on the sage's shoulder.

When the sage's son Shringi heard of it, he angrily cursed: "On the seventh day from today the serpent Takshaka will bite and kill him." Hearing it, Parikshit grieved, but he did not lose heart through fear. He handed the kingdom to his son and sat on the bank of the Ganga.

Many sages gathered there. He put one question: "What should a man do who is nearing death?" Then the sage Shuka arrived and, the Purana says, recited the Bhagavata to him over the seven days. Parikshit listened without a break.

The special thing about this story is that the king did not waste any of the seven days he had. We do not know how many days any of us has; it could be seven days or seventy years. Parikshit put into practice the call of the couplet, "Do the good eagerly before the tongue stiffens and hiccups come."

Commentators do not take Parikshit's story as a direct illustration of this couplet; the fit is only for our own study. Yet his conduct matches the spirit of the couplet. He did not spend his remaining days in political troubles or in fear; he spent them in listening and reflecting. How one meets death shows the quality of one's life.

We may not have a seven-day curse, but each day is a chance in itself. Today we can help someone, ask someone's pardon, thank someone. All these are good deeds. If we do them without delay, there will be no regret when death comes.

To reflect on

If you knew you had only seven days, which good deed or relationship would you attend to first, and why not start now?
