Explanation

The last couplet of the chapter ends as a question. The life dwells in the body as a "thuchchil", a temporary shelter. The question is whether it has not found a "pukkil", a lasting home of its own. The word "kollo" sounds with a mixture of wonder and pity.

Commentators give different explanations of this couplet. Some say that because life moves from one body to another it has no home of its own. Others take the lasting home to be the final release, mukti, and read the question as asking whether life has not yet reached its true dwelling, liberation. Both explanations show that this couplet guides toward renunciation.

At the chapter's end the couplet gives us a thought. We cling to our body, our house, our wealth; but in truth the place where we live is only temporary. When the clarity comes that everything is borrowed, the mind is freed from the grip of attachment.

For the next chapter, on renunciation, this couplet is a stepping stone. Only one who has understood impermanence will seek renunciation.

The word "thuchchil" is especially notable in this couplet. It gives the sense of a small temporary shed or borrowed place. Valluvar does not take the body as the life's own house; he sees it only as a borrowed lodging. This choice of word makes his idea clear in the briefest way.

Because it ends as a question, the couplet leaves us with a thought. The search for what is the lasting home of life is the beginning of renunciation and wisdom. Valluvar raises the question without stating the answer; we must seek the answer through our own lives.

A story

Pattinathar's Path

Pattinathar is a revered renunciant in the Tamil Shaiva tradition. Tradition says he was born in a wealthy merchant family in Kaveripoompattinam. Though he lived as a householder with great wealth, it is said that an incident changed his life. Tradition holds that it gave him the clarity that wealth and relationships are impermanent.

He gave up all his wealth and took up renunciation. He was one who realised that home, trade and wealth were all only temporary lodgings. Going from place to place, texts note, he sang in simple songs of the impermanence of the body and the permanence of God.

The event at the death of his mother is much spoken of. Now a renunciant, he came to perform his mother's last rites; tradition says that although relatives objected, he lit the pyre for her body himself. He is said to have sung moving songs about his mother then. The details of these reports are told in different ways.

His life became a journey away from the delusion that the body is the home of life, toward the true home that life seeks. Followers of the tradition honour him as having answered the question in the couplet, "Has the life that dwells in the body as a borrowed shelter not found a home of its own?", with his own life.

To reflect on

What do you hold as 'home' that is really only a temporary shelter, and what would a lasting home mean for you?
