Instability · Nilaiyaamai

This chapter teaches that wealth, days, the body and life itself are all impermanent, and that realising this we should do good without delay, before time takes it all away.

Introduction

Nilaiyaamai means the state of not remaining. Valluvar begins by calling it ignorance to take what does not last as lasting. Coming after compassion, abstaining from meat, austerity, false conduct, non-stealing, truthfulness, freedom from anger, not causing pain and non-killing, this chapter in the section on ascetic virtue is the doorway to the next chapter on renunciation. Only one who has understood what is impermanent will be ready to let go of it.

The first couplet names the folly: the shallow mind that takes the transient for the permanent is the lowest kind of understanding. The second likens wealth to the crowd gathered at a street show; it gathers and disperses with equal speed. The third draws a practical conclusion: since wealth does not stay, do the good deed the moment wealth comes.

The fourth couplet compares time to a saw. Each day that seems like just another day is in truth cutting away the span of life. The fifth sets before us the scene of death, the tongue stiffening and hiccups rising, and asks us to do good before it comes. The sixth and seventh couplets speak, with a touch of irony, of the greatness of a world where one who lived yesterday is gone today, and of people who cannot be sure of living an hour yet make plans by the million.

The eighth couplet compares the friendship of body and life to a bird leaving the nest. The ninth compares death to sleep and birth to waking. The tenth puts a question: has the life, lodging inside the body, found only a borrowed house?

We should notice that this chapter does not teach gloom. Valluvar does not ask us to hate life; he asks us to keep in mind how short it is and to do good quickly. The ninth and tenth couplets draw different readings from commentators. Some take them as referring to rebirth; others take them as figures of speech only. In either case the message is one: fill the days we have with good.

Our tradition stresses this in many places. The Bhagavad Gita and the Upanishads distinguish the impermanence of things from the permanence of the self. The songs of the Tamil Siddhas and of Pattinathar show the body's impermanence in simple words. Valluvar walks the same path and gives it in the compact kural form that belongs to Tamil.

Chapter story

The Yaksha's Questions and the Greatest Wonder

The Vana Parva of the Mahabharata tells the famous episode of the Yaksha's questions. During the exile of the Pandavas, one day, tired and thirsty, Nakula went to look for water and found a lake. A voice warned him: "Do not drink the water before you answer my questions." Mad with thirst, Nakula ignored it and drank; he fell at once. Sahadeva, Arjuna and Bhima went one after another and met the same end.

Last came Yudhishthira. Seeing his four brothers lying as if lifeless, he was plunged in grief. Then the Yaksha put his questions. One of them was: "What is the greatest wonder in the world?" Yudhishthira answered: "Day after day countless beings go to the abode of Yama. Those who remain think they will live forever. What could be a greater wonder than this?"

That answer pleased the Yaksha. But what impressed him even more was Yudhishthira's hold on dharma. When he offered to revive one brother as a boon, tradition says Yudhishthira asked for Nakula, the son of Madri, the second wife of his father, and not for Bhima or Arjuna, sons of his own mother Kunti. His argument was that both mothers should receive equal justice. Moved by this fairness, the Yaksha revived all four.

Tradition says the Yaksha was Dharma himself, the father of Yudhishthira.

This tale gives the central message of the chapter in one line. What the couplet says, "The world has the greatness that one who lived yesterday is gone today," the Pandavas learned by experience. Brothers who had been alive till a moment ago fell in an instant. Only one who knows that death is always near will guard dharma without delay.

The Yaksha's other questions go the same way, tradition says. When asked, "What is the path?", Yudhishthira is said in the Mahabharata to have answered that arguments are many, the scriptures differ, the sages do not agree, the truth of dharma lies hidden as if in a cave, and therefore the path is the one that great people have walked. The reply carries the message that, rather than understanding dharma alone, following the experience of the great is safer.

We should think of this story together with impermanence. Thirst is an everyday bodily need; those who went to satisfy it met death. In the hope of tomorrow we put off many duties, but that tomorrow is not guaranteed to us. Yudhishthira's calm and clarity are admirable for just this reason. He accepted the truth of the situation, yet did not give up dharma.

Even today this question and answer are recited in temple festivals and in storytelling sessions. Those who hear it fall silent for a moment, thinking of the impermanence of their own lives. The message of the couplet is the same: the moment the realisation is born is the moment dharma begins.

Key lessons

  • To take the impermanent as permanent is shallow understanding.
  • Wealth comes and goes like a crowd; spend it on good as soon as it comes.
  • Each day is a saw cutting life; do not waste time.
  • Do the good before death calls.
  • Do not assume tomorrow is ours; practise compassion and dharma today.
