Explanation

In this couplet Valluvar states the impermanence of the world as a simple event: the person who spoke yesterday, alive, is not here today. Because this is news we hear every day, its shock grows dull for us. The couplet arose to sharpen that blunted feeling.

The word "perumai" here is worth noting. Commentators give two senses. Some take it as the wondrous nature of the world; others take it with an ironic tone, as "this is the greatness of this world". Both views point to our astonishing ease in accepting such impermanence.

Yudhishthira's "greatest wonder of the world" in the Yaksha's questions matches the inner feeling of this couplet. Death happens every day, yet we live as if it will not happen to us. That frame of mind is the proper object of wonder and sorrow alike.

Its practical use is this: behave lovingly with those who are with us today, and set aside harsh words, anger and enmity. If we remember that tomorrow they may be gone, sulking and quarrels become small.

The word "ennum" in the couplet points to a common way of speaking, the saying people exchange: "He was here yesterday, today he is not." That it has become such a familiar phrase shows that we have grown used to this truth. Because we are used to it, it does not wake us. Valluvar throws a stone at that habit.

A story

The End of Dwaraka

The Mausala Parva of the Mahabharata and the Bhagavata Purana tell the end of the Yadava clan. Dwaraka, ruled by Krishna, was a city full of wealth and fame. The Yadavas who lived there, the texts say, were strong and proud. One day they insulted some sages; tradition holds that they received a curse that their own clan would perish.

Later, at a festival at Prabhasa, the Mahabharata says, the Yadavas drank, argued and fell to fighting among themselves, and killed one another using the very reeds growing there as weapons. Those who had celebrated the festival as one clan until yesterday were gone that day.

When Arjuna came to Dwaraka, things had changed. Learning that his beloved Krishna had left this world, he was plunged in grief. Afterwards, tradition says, Dwaraka was covered by the sea. A place that had been famed as the most exalted city was gone in a few days.

The texts also mention that Arjuna felt his own power with the bow fade. He therefore went to his brother and told him everything; the Pandavas took up renunciation of the world.

The couplet "The world has the greatness that one who lived yesterday is gone today" proves true in this story at the scale of a city and a clan.

We may take this story not only as a warning but as a lesson. If a clan so exalted in strength, wealth and fame could vanish in a few days, how wrong is it for one individual to think his own standing secure? The end of Dwaraka is remembered in our tradition as among the greatest examples of impermanence.
