Explanation

Classical commentators read the first line of this verse in two ways. Some take it to mean 'if you want that joy to arise, renounce'. Others take it as 'renounce so that the thing you long for, liberation, may arise'. Valluvar seems to have built the line so that both readings can stand. Either way the message is the same: letting go is the door to real joy.

The second line gives the reason. After renouncing, he says, there are 'many things that naturally come about' even here in this life. A hand clenched around a stone cannot receive a flower. In the same way, a mind that is gripped by possessions cannot taste peace, friendship, the beauty of nature or the joy of art. These pleasures were all there; only the grasping hand was in the way.

How does this apply today? We see people with many possessions who, busy guarding them, cannot even enjoy an evening breeze. Others, who have reduced their wants, find fullness in a simple meal eaten with family. The verse does not praise poverty. It asks us to recover the true taste of life, which is hidden under the pile of surplus wishes. And the word 'thurakka' is in the imperative form, which also carries the hint that we should begin soon, and not leave it for later.

A practical test is easy to try. For one day, leave the phone aside for an hour and notice what is already there around you. Let a sunset be only a sunset. You will often find that the joy you were chasing was waiting at the place you stopped running.

A story

Yayati Learns the Fire's Lesson

The story of King Yayati is told in the Adi Parva of the Mahabharata and in Puranas such as the Bhagavata. He was a son of Nahusha and a great emperor, married to Devayani, the daughter of the sage Shukracharya. His appetite for pleasure never seemed to be satisfied. At one point, the scriptures say, a curse of Shukracharya made him old before his time.

Even in old age Yayati's desire for pleasure did not fade, and he asked his sons to give him their youth. The elder sons refused. Only the youngest, Puru, out of love for his father, gave his youth and took his father's old age upon himself. For many years Yayati enjoyed every pleasure.

But after a thousand years of indulgence his craving was still not quenched. At that moment a clarity rose in him. Pouring ghee on a fire does not put it out; it makes it burn higher. In the same way, he understood, desire can never be filled by feeding it with enjoyment.

He returned the youth to Puru. He made Puru king and went to the forest to practise austerity himself. Only after he let go of what he had chased all his life did true peace come to him.

Yayati's story asks us a question: is it right to wait until we have enjoyed everything before we renounce? If repeated indulgence never ends desire, that waiting is useless. This is what Valluvar's 'renounce, if you want joy' points to. To say 'I will give up after I have enjoyed it all' is a journey without an end. One who learns to let go early gains the peace Yayati found at last, without carrying the burden of the thousand years he passed through.

The story does not scorn Yayati. It honours the fact that he recognised his error and corrected it, which is something every one of us can still do.

To reflect on

Is there something you keep telling yourself you will give up only after one more round of enjoying it? What would it feel like to give it up today?
