Explanation

The first verse named the outer limbs of the king; this verse names his inner ones: fearlessness, generosity, wisdom and energy. 'Enjaamai' means non-diminishing; that is, none of these should ever fall short. Only the four together make the whole, and if one is missing the others become useless.

A king without fearlessness will bow to the slightest threat from an enemy. A king without generosity locks up his wealth and loses the love of his people. A king without wisdom, though brave and generous, will spend those gifts on wrong paths. A king without energy, though he has everything, will do nothing. So the four qualities balance one another.

We may link the four to ordinary needs of life. Fearlessness gives courage to speak the truth and stand for justice. Generosity builds a heart that shares. Wisdom helps in taking the right decision. Energy gives the power to complete a task undertaken. These are needed not only by kings but by every leader, parent, teacher and manager.

The word 'iyalbu' also deserves notice. Valluvar says these are not qualities that stick on from outside but ones that must be the king's very nature. People soon see through a generosity that is acted. It is inner character that keeps leadership steady. A useful test for any of us is to ask which of the four is weakest in our habits, and to practise it daily in small ways, such as one honest word, one gift, one study hour and one task finished.

A story

Raghu and Kautsa

Kalidasa's epic Raghuvamsa tells the story of King Raghu. Raghu ruled Ayodhya after his father Dilipa and was an ancestor of Rama. At one point he performed the great sacrifice called Vishvajit, and in it he gave away all his wealth, the epic says.

At that time Kautsa, a student of the sage Varatantu, came to him. Having finished his studies, he wished to offer his teacher a fee. Varatantu said he wanted nothing, but when Kautsa insisted he asked for fourteen crore gold coins. Kautsa approached Raghu for help.

Raghu welcomed him with the arghya offering in an earthen vessel. Seeing it, Kautsa said, 'O king, is this your state? I do not wish to trouble you, I shall try elsewhere,' and began to leave. Raghu stopped him and said, 'Your request will be met in a day. Until then stay in my fire hall. I will not bear the blame that a worthy one came to my door and returned empty-handed.'

Raghu thought deeply. His own land and the minor kings he had conquered had no wealth. So he decided to march against Kubera, the lord of wealth, and take it from him. He loaded his chariot with weapons and prepared to set out at dawn.

That very night Kubera rained gold into Raghu's treasury, the epic says. At daybreak Raghu offered the whole of it to Kautsa. Kautsa said he would take only the fourteen crore he needed. In the end Kautsa received only what was his due and blessed Raghu, wishing that a great son be born to him, and that son became Aja.

The four qualities of the verse show clearly in this story. Fearlessness: he dared to oppose even Kubera. Generosity: he had earlier given away all his wealth. Wisdom: he understood Kautsa's need and sought the right means. Energy: he moved to action in a single night.

To reflect on

Of fearlessness, generosity, wisdom and energy, which one would your friends say you lean on most, and which one deserves more of your effort?
