Explanation

This verse names three qualities: wakefulness, learning and decisiveness. The first, 'thoongaamai', literally means not sleeping, but here it carries a wider sense: alertness, absence of sloth, constant attention to the state of the country. A king must never sink into carelessness. An alertness that notices even small warning signs prevents great dangers.

The second is learning. A king must be a learned man, for clear decisions need both book knowledge and experience. A king cannot be an expert in everything, but he should not give up the habit of learning, and should keep wise people about him. The third is decisiveness. Even when there is knowledge and alertness, a leader who hesitates in deciding is useless. A decision made too late is often worse than a bad decision made in time.

The three act as a chain: alertness brings the news, learning explains its meaning, and decisiveness turns it into action. If one is missing the chain snaps.

In today's life this applies to every leader. In the market, school or family, the watchfulness to notice changes, the learning to understand them and the decision made at the right time are the basis of success. The word 'nilanaalbavar' makes us think not only of those who rule land but of anyone who governs a sphere of responsibility. For each of us a small habit supports all three: at the start of the day, glance at what needs attention, set aside a few minutes to learn something relevant, and decide one pending matter instead of deferring it.

A story

Rama Accepts Vibhishana

In the Yuddha Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana, one of Rama's decisive choices is described. In Lanka, Vibhishana, who had given Ravana good counsel, was insulted and driven out. With four ministers he crossed the sea and reached Rama's camp and, standing in the sky, said, 'I am Ravana's brother. I have come to take refuge in you for the sake of dharma.'

The vanara chiefs were suspicious. Sugriva said, 'He is Ravana's brother, he may be a spy. Do not accept him.' Others also warned. Rama listened patiently to all opinions. He asked for views separately from the learned ministers, the commanders, Jambavan and Angada.

Only Hanuman saw truth in Vibhishana's speech. He explained clearly that his appearance, words and humility all showed sincerity. After hearing everyone Rama announced his decision firmly: 'I will never abandon one who comes seeking refuge. Even if Ravana himself came and surrendered, I would grant him refuge.'

In that decision three qualities of Rama came out. Wakefulness: he looked carefully into the arrival of a stranger. Learning: he consulted and recalled the teachings of the scriptures; tradition says he even cited the old tale of the dove and the hunter. Decisiveness: he decided firmly even amid doubts.

That decision later changed the course of the war. Vibhishana's knowledge of Lanka's defences, its army arrangements and Ravana's strengths and weaknesses helped Rama greatly. After Ravana fell, Vibhishana himself was crowned king of Lanka.

Rama neither accepted a person's word blindly nor rejected it out of fear. He examined with alertness, applied what he had learned, and decided with courage.

These are the three qualities which, as Valluvar says, must never leave one who rules.

To reflect on

Think of a decision you've been postponing. What do you already know, and what is the one thing you are waiting for that may never come?
