Explanation

This verse speaks of the nature of the state, in which dharma and valour are joined. 'Aran izhukkaadhu' means not slipping from dharma, and 'allavai neekki' means removing from the land the evils that are against dharma. The two acts stand for the ruler's own conduct and the condition of the land. A state that itself strays from dharma cannot teach dharma to others. So first one's own conduct, then the removal of evils in the country.

In the second half comes 'maran izhukkaa maanam'. 'Maram' is valour and 'maanam' is self-respect, a sense of honour. Honour that does not fail in valour means keeping valour and self-respect unlowered before an enemy. But valour here is not mere skill in war; it is the firmness that guards self-respect. It must be a valour that gives no room to acts against dharma. Commentators explain it as heroic honour or as honour that does not fail dharma even in battle.

In this verse dharma and valour both come as the two pillars of a single state. Valour without dharma is tyranny, and dharma without valour is weakness. A state earns respect only when both are in balance.

In today's life, any institution should hold to its principles without lapse and have the firmness and sense of honour to stand against evil. For a company, standing without compromising its integrity is its honour. For an individual, the same is true: to refuse a dishonest shortcut, and to do so with calm self-respect and not with anger, is the modern form of the verse. The quiet 'no' that protects one's honour is a small act of valour that sustains a larger dharma.

A story

Dilipa and Nandini

In the second canto of Kalidasa's Raghuvamsa, the story of King Dilipa is told. Dilipa ruled Ayodhya and was the father of Raghu. He and his wife Sudakshina had no child for a long time. They went to their family preceptor Vasishtha for advice.

Vasishtha asked them to serve the cow Nandini, a daughter of Kamadhenu, at his hermitage. He said that the lack came from a past disrespect shown to Kamadhenu. Dilipa took up the work of tending Nandini. Forgetting that he was a king, he followed the cow like a simple herdsman.

On the twenty-first day, as Nandini was grazing on a slope of the Himalaya, a lion suddenly sprang and seized her. Dilipa took up his bow and began to draw an arrow, but his hand seemed stuck to the quiver and would not move.

Then the lion spoke in a human voice: 'O king, I am a servant of Kubera, guarding Parvati's deodar tree in this lion's form. Whatever strays here is my food.' Dilipa answered humbly, 'This cow is my teacher's wealth. It is my duty to protect her. Take my body in her place.'

The lion tried to dissuade him: 'You are a king. Will you give your life for a cow? Are your wealth and fame not enough?' Dilipa said firmly, 'For a man to live without protecting the one who trusted him is a stain on his honour. Honour is greater than life.' He bowed his head and lay before the lion.

Then flowers rained from the sky. The lion vanished, and it became clear that it was a test conjured by Nandini by her power. Nandini, marvelling at his dharma and honour, granted a boon: 'If you drink my milk, you will have a son.' In time Raghu was born.

This story is a living example of the verse 'not failing dharma, and honour that never fails valour'.
