Explanation

The verse turns on three words: 'anjaamai' (fearlessness), 'enjaamai' (without leaving anything out) and 'idam' (place). 'Enjaamai enni' means thinking things through thoroughly, leaving nothing remaining. 'Idaththaal seyin' means acting after choosing a suitable place. When both are present, no auxiliary force is needed; a fearless heart is enough, says Valluvar.

Most people seek allies because of fear. The dread of failing alone makes them lean on others. But when the plan is complete and the place well chosen, that dread lessens. One who has planned well meets fewer surprises.

Valluvar is not praising only the lone hero. The word 'enni', having thought, shows that the hero first reflected. Courage alone is reckless adventure; courage joined with knowledge brings victory. An important part of that knowledge is knowing the place.

For today's life this may be applied thus: before starting a task, write down all its sides, choose where and when to begin, and then act without hesitation. That is the shape of this counsel.

So complete thought, the right place and a fearless mind together make allies unnecessary. That is the meaning of the verse.

Note that 'thunai venda', no ally needed, should not be read as arrogance. Its aim is not to refuse help but to urge full use of one's own knowledge and courage. If the plan has gaps, allies become necessary; a plan without gaps can bring even a lone person to success. That is the sense.

In this way Valluvar joins the three: a mind that has examined everything, a place well chosen, and a heart without fear. Take away any one and the whole becomes weak.

A story

Hanuman Alone in Lanka

From the Valmiki Ramayana (Sundara Kanda): Hanuman took on the task of crossing the sea to search for Sita. He did not go with an army; he went alone. But before leaving, he asked the elders such as Jambavan about the layout of Lanka, the strength of the rakshasas and the way across the sea. He thought the task through without leaving anything out.

When he leapt from Mount Mahendra to Lanka, Surasa, Simhika and others blocked his path in the middle. With each he acted according to place and circumstance. Before Surasa he made his body small, entered her mouth and came out. He entered Simhika's belly and brought her down.

Lanka was heavily guarded. If he searched by day he would be caught. So at night, taking a small form like a cat, he searched the palaces and streets. This knowledge, changing form according to the place, was his only ally. When he found Sita in the Ashoka grove, he sat in a tree and waited until the guards slept.

He won Sita's trust by showing Rama's ring. Then he broke down the grove, fought the rakshasa host, and stood in Ravana's court to speak directly. He set Lanka afire, finished his task and returned without any companion.

Hanuman had complete planning, action suited to the place, and a fearless heart. That is why he needed no other ally.
