Explanation

The last verse of this chapter ends with a powerful picture. An elephant that stands unafraid even before spearmen in the battlefield has great strength. But if that same elephant is caught in a marsh where its feet sink, even a small jackal can kill it.

'Kaalaazh kalar' is a swamp where the foot sinks. There the elephant's huge body becomes a burden to itself. Because it is heavy, it sinks deeper. Its strength, once a benefit, is now a harm. Then even a small creature like a jackal can torment it.

This simile gathers the thought of the earlier verses. The crocodile is strong in water and the elephant on land; when the place changes, the strength falters. The elephant that does not fear spearmen must fear the mud. So valour must be joined with the vigilance that knows the place.

Not only leaders but everyone should learn this. Those proud of their strength must think before stepping onto unknown, dangerous ground. It is also wrong to look down on the small; if circumstances change, they may be the ones who win.

So even with strength, one must not go without examining the place. That is the crowning lesson of this chapter.

A story

Karna's Chariot Wheel in the Mud

From the Mahabharata (Karna Parva): It was the seventeenth day of the Kurukshetra war. Karna, now commander of the Kaurava army, was an unrivalled archer, and few could stand unafraid before him. That day he and Arjuna fought face to face. Neither fell short in strength. Arrows hid the sky.

At the height of the battle, Karna's chariot wheel suddenly sank into soft, muddy ground. The Mahabharata says that earlier curses, including that of the Earth goddess, were recalled to him. He got down from his chariot and tried to lift the wheel with both hands.

Even so great a warrior could not move the wheel sunk in the mud. His arrows and armour were of no use then. That small patch of marsh crippled his unmatched strength.

Krishna urged Arjuna to use the moment. Karna spoke of dharma, but Krishna reminded him that he had once insulted Draupadi in the assembly and was among those who surrounded and killed Abhimanyu. Arjuna's arrow brought Karna down.

As the elephant unafraid of spearmen falls in a swamp, so even the mightiest warrior who fights without examining the ground under his feet stumbles where he never expected. This episode reminds us of that.

The Mahabharata tells this episode at length to show how a strong man can in one moment become powerless. It thus underlines the verse's message: do not be proud of your strength, and examine every ground on which you set your foot.
