Explanation

This verse speaks of the strength of one's own land. 'Sirai-nalan' means defensive facilities such as fort, moat and rampart. 'Seer' means distinctions such as wealth and fame. Valluvar's view is that even a people without any of these is hard to defeat when they live in their own homeland.

There are many reasons. Every path, spring and hiding place of their land is well known to these people. Food, water and support come to them easily. Their will to fight arises from love of their soil. The outsider has none of these.

The invader must bring food from afar, may lose his way in an unknown land, and finds the people hostile. These shortcomings reduce his army's strength. So even a strong army weakens on foreign ground.

Two lessons follow from this. First, we should value the benefit of our own land. Second, those who think of conquering another land must not take its people lightly.

So attachment to one's native soil and knowledge of it are a stronger protection than wealth and ramparts. That is the message of the verse.

'Ottal aridhu', hard to contend, can also suggest that it is hard to rule in harmony over such a people. One who rules while at enmity with the people of their own land will have no peace. So another subtle lesson is that the people must not be made enemies, and their affection must be won.

For a defender, the verse is a comfort: your homeland itself is an ally. For an attacker, it is a warning.

A story

Maharana Pratap in the Aravalli Hills

From Rajput history: Maharana Pratap Singh of Mewar refused to accept the rule of the Mughal emperor Akbar. In 1576 at Haldighati his small army faced the great Mughal force. Pratap did not win that battle, but escaped from the field with the help of his horse Chetak.

He no longer held the fort of Chittor. He had neither wealth nor a great army. But he made the Aravalli hills and forests, where his people lived, his stronghold. The Bhil tribespeople of that hill country stood by him. They knew every path of the hills and were skilled with the bow.

When Mughal forces entered the hills of Mewar they lost their way. Food and water were hard to find. From somewhere unseen the Bhils loosed their arrows. Though the armies numbered thousands, they could not overcome the people of their own land. Pratap lived a simple life in the forests, eating coarse grain bread, but remained with his people.

This went on for many years. Over time the Mughal pressure eased. Pratap recovered most of Mewar except Chittor. Without palace, wealth or fame, he was not defeated because he stood with the people of his land.

The hills of Mewar still recall the truth of the verse: it is hard to contend with a people on their own soil.
