Explanation

The phrase 'aatrin alavarindhu' in this couplet is taken in different ways by commentators. Parimelazhagar and others take it as knowing the extent of the texts and their method. Some take it as knowing the measure of one's own capacity. Others take it as the method of the science of reasoning. In any case the heart of the couplet is that learning should be undertaken with method and with knowledge of its limits.

'For the sake of giving a reply' is a special point. What is learning for? For giving a fitting reply when a question arises in the assembly. That is, one should learn while thinking, 'If this is asked, how shall I answer?' One who learns so does not fear the assembly, for he has prepared himself for any question.

This couplet shows the practical way of overcoming fear: preparation. Answering aloud in one's own voice before an examination, asking friends to question us, and anticipating objections beforehand are today's form of this couplet. Another subtle point lies in 'knowing the extent'. One cannot learn everything; the phrase can also mean choosing what to learn so that it will serve in the assembly. Some books give depth and some give breadth, and the questions arising in the hall need both. The couplet also reminds us that discussing and stating what we have read with others is part of proper learning.

A story

A Young Scholar Before the Kumbakonam Assembly

This is an imagined tale. At Kumbakonam in a Mahamaham year it is customary to hold an assembly of scholars. At that assembly a young pandit, Anantharaman, was invited to his first debate on a text. He had studied Nyaya at the Kaveri bank under his teacher Narayana Shastri. Although he had read the texts well, the very thought of speaking before so many great scholars made him tremble.

His teacher knew this. 'It is not enough to read the text; one must also practise how an opponent will question it,' he said. From that day, every evening in the gurukula a game called purvapaksha was played. The teacher sat as the opponent and asked hard questions; Anantharaman answered. Some days he stumbled, but each stumble became the next day's preparation.

On the day of the assembly many great scholars sat in the hall. One put forward a strong objection. Anantharaman met it in the way he had practised with his teacher. First he restated the opposing view faithfully; then he placed his own argument step by step. The assembly accepted the reply and nodded.

Later Narayana Shastri said with a smile, 'I heard your first word tremble in the hall; your second stood firm.' Anantharaman understood: fear does not entirely go, but preparation makes one stand. The couplet 'learn with method and measure in order to answer in the assembly without fear' became his guide from that day.
