Explanation

The very first couplet of the chapter names the root of fearlessness: clarity. One who knows the kinds of speech and how they fit together settles beforehand what to say and in what order. One who has arranged things so does not falter in the assembly. 'Vaaichorar' can be taken in several ways: the tongue does not tire, the words are not forgotten, and the sentence is not left unfinished.

Commentators differ slightly on 'vallavai'. Some take it as the matters in which the speaker is skilled; others take it as strong words, that is, forceful arguments. Both lead to the same conclusion: the one who can arrange his strength in the form of speech is the one who does not falter in the hall.

The word 'purity of mind' appears here again, and it should be noted. The foundation of fearlessness is an unclouded heart. One who speaks to deceive others or to exalt himself fears to meet the eyes of the assembly. One who speaks truth for the good crosses that fear easily. Even today anyone who must speak at a meeting and has arranged his notes clearly finds that half the trembling has gone. The ancients themselves divided a talk into opening, development and close, which is an old example of this.

A story

Yudhishthira and the Yaksha's Questions

The Vana Parva of the Mahabharata tells of the Yaksha Prashna. While the Pandavas were in exile, a deer carried away the fire-sticks of a brahmin. Searching for it, the Pandavas reached a lake, thirsty. A yaksha there said, 'Drink only after answering my questions.' Nakula, Sahadeva, Arjuna and Bhima in turn drank in haste and fell senseless.

Yudhishthira, who came last, heard the voice. Seeing his brothers lying there he showed neither anger nor haste. He said, 'Ask, and I shall say as far as I know.' The yaksha is said to have asked over a hundred questions: 'Who is more patient than the earth? What is higher than the sky? What is swifter than the wind?'

Yudhishthira answered each question clearly and briefly: 'The mother is more patient than the earth; the father is higher than the sky; the mind is swifter than the wind.' To 'What is happiness?' he said, 'The fruit of good conduct.' His reply to the question 'What is the news?' became famous: Time cooks beings in the cauldron of the world, using day and night as fuel and months and seasons as the ladle.

The yaksha was pleased and offered to restore one brother's life. Yudhishthira chose Nakula, his stepmother's son. His reason was impartial: 'Kunti has two sons living, let Madri too have a son live.' The yaksha revealed himself as Dharma and raised all four.

In this episode Yudhishthira arranged his answers clearly and did not falter. He had no fear because what he said came from the dharma he lived. The story shows that clarity and purity in the heart before speaking keep the mouth from faltering.
