Explanation

'Pallavai' means many books and many arts. However wide the learning, Valluvar says it is without benefit if not stated fittingly in the assembly of the good. For 'payamilar' commentators generally take 'those without benefit'; some take 'those without fear', but that does not suit the tenor of the chapter. 'Without benefit' is the better reading.

The words 'good assembly' and 'selach chollaadhaar' are important here. The 'good assembly' is a place where knowledge and virtue gather. The word spoken there needs fitness. It is not enough to pour out one's learning; one must classify it and state it fittingly so that it settles in the hearer's knowledge.

Thus having learning and expressing it in the right place and the right way are two different skills. One who has the first but lacks the second has not completed his learning. This couplet is a mirror for the learned to weigh their own state. At first reading this couplet may seem harsh. But it really asks learners a question: what is my purpose in learning? To gain a degree, or to be of use? The fruit of studying many works is completed only when one states the truth clearly in a good assembly and establishes it. Otherwise what is learned becomes a burden. So the couplet asks us to grow the skill of telling along with learning.

A story

The Four Scholars and the Lion

The Panchatantra has the story of four scholars. In one town were four friends. Three of them were pundits learned in many texts; the fourth had less book learning but had worldly sense. The four set out to seek fortune.

On the forest path they saw the scattered bones of a lion. The three pundits wished to show their learned art. One gathered the bones; another provided flesh and skin; the third prepared to give it life. The fourth warned, 'This is a lion; once alive, it will kill us.'

The three mocked him. 'We must prove the learning we have gained,' they said. The fourth climbed a tree. As soon as the third gave life, the lion rose and killed all three. The one who had worldly wisdom along with knowledge came down from the tree and survived.

In this story the pundits who had learned many texts perished because they lacked the sense of where and how to use their learning. Valluvar's couplet speaks of the ability to speak, while the tale speaks of the ability to apply. Yet both point to one truth: those who have studied many works but cannot use them in the right place and manner are of little benefit. The survivor among the four had, along with learning, the wisdom of fitness. The tale teaches this simply to children and the young.
