Explanation

Learning is not only reading; it is also stating what one has learned so that others understand and retain it. The couplet makes this sharply: all in a gathering of the learned are learned, but the one who is truly honoured as learned among them is he who can state what he has learned so that it takes effect. 'Selachchollal' means saying so that it reaches the hearer's mind and is accepted.

'Before the learned' is a hard setting. It is easy to speak before the unlettered, who will find no fault. Before the learned every word is weighed. One who speaks clearly and faultlessly even there proves his learning true. One who does not holds his learning as a hidden wealth that is useful only to himself.

The couplet does not belittle the learned; it shows what completeness of learning is. Writing an examination, presenting a paper to a gathering, and placing one's views before a panel of experts are modern equivalents. It is the power to cast knowledge into word and argument that makes a scholar complete. There is also a caution. Speaking in the assembly is not to display the glory of one's learning but to be useful to the listener. Some pile up words to astonish, yet what they say does not stay in the hearer's mind. The phrase 'selachchollal' marks that difference: the measure is whether what was said reached its goal.

A story

Adi Shankara and Mandana Mishra

Among the Shankara Vijaya accounts that tradition gives of Adi Shankara's life, the debate with Mandana Mishra is renowned. Mandana Mishra was a great Mimamsaka scholar at Mahishmati who held that the Vedic rites are the way of life. Tradition says he met Shankara when the latter travelled across the land to establish Advaita.

The judge of the debate was Mandana's wife, Ubhaya Bharati, praised for her learning and wisdom. Garlands of flowers were placed on both debaters. It was agreed that the one whose garland wilted first would be the loser, who must accept the way of the winner.

The debate continued day after day. Veda, Mimamsa and Upanishad were all cited. Shankara listened to each of Mandana's strong arguments in turn and answered calmly and clearly. The way he stated his learning before the learned so that it took hold impressed the scholarly assembly. In the end, the account says, Mandana's garland wilted.

Ubhaya Bharati accepted her husband's defeat with honesty. Some traditions say she then proposed to put her own questions to Shankara and continued the debate, and that Mandana became Shankara's disciple under the name Sureshvaracharya. Traditions differ on whether Mandana and Sureshvara were one person; Mimamsakas and Advaitins tell the story from their own viewpoints.

The link with the couplet is that in a hall of the learned, before the learned, Shankara established his view firmly. He shone as a scholar among scholars through the power to state his learning so that it took effect. The grace with which Ubhaya Bharati, as umpire, accepted the result is also worthy of honour.

To reflect on

If you had to put your view before experts in your own field, how would you state it so that it truly takes hold?
