Meaning

Those who rise in anger like beasts, only to win, stand beaten in the assembly; while the practised speakers, when they rise, show teeth set in a row like gourd seeds held in the hand.

Explanation

The first half sets two kinds of speakers side by side. One rises hot and angry, out only to win. The other has a skill worn smooth by long practice.

In the second half, when the practised man rises, his teeth appear in a row like gourd seeds in the hand — words coming evenly, without gaps, in order. Whether the verse means this as praise or as a mild mockery it does not say outright. But read with the beast image of the previous line, the message is clear: the one who leaps up snarling to win is the one left standing beaten, while the speaker of steady order holds his place in the hall.

To reflect on

The man who leaps to win is left beaten; the man who speaks in order keeps his place.
