Explanation

Thirukkothumbi was sung at Thillai. The kothumbi is the king of bees. A bee that flits from flower to flower after honey is the mind that wanders after pleasure. Manikkavasagar speaks to his own mind: leave the other flowers and go only to the flower of the Lord's feet.

The very first verse gives a grand list: Brahma, Indra, Saraswati, Vishnu, the Vedas, the gods. None of them know those feet. Yet a little bee is free to go there. What greatness cannot reach, love can.

Periya Puranam (Sekkizhar), the life of Kannappa Nayanar; temple tradition of Thirukkalahasti

Kannappar, Who Gave His Eyes

Thinnan was born the son of a hunter chief in the hill country of Pothappi. One day, chasing a wild boar, he came to the hill of Kalahasti. When he saw a linga on the hilltop, his heart melted. 'My Father is here all alone. Who will bring him food?' he worried.

He knew nothing of the rules of worship. He filled his mouth with river water and poured it over the linga; he decked it with the flowers he had worn in his own hair; he offered meat he had roasted with care and tasted himself to be sure it was good. All night he stood guard with his bow. In the morning the priest Sivagochariyar, who performed the daily worship, was distressed to see all this. The Lord came to him in a dream and said, 'Hide tomorrow and watch.'

The next day, when Thinnan came, blood was flowing from one eye of the linga. Frantic, he put on healing herbs, but the blood did not stop. Thinking 'flesh heals flesh', he gouged out his own eye with his arrow and pressed it on; the bleeding stopped, and he danced for joy. Then the other eye began to bleed. To mark the spot, he planted his sandalled foot on it and raised his arrow to his second eye. At that moment the Lord's hand came out and caught his hand, and a voice said three times, 'Stop, Kannappa!' His sight was restored and he was named Kannappar, 'the one who gave his eye'. The Lord granted that he would stand forever at his right side; he is remembered as the saint who reached release in six days. When Manikkavasagar sings that the Lord took him even after seeing he had no love like Kannappan's, it is by this love that he measures himself.
