Meaning

My Lord, long ago you stood before me and ruled me. I too have tried, and I follow behind you and serve. Yet I have fallen behind. Lord who delights in dancing in the Golden Hall, if you do not graciously say to me 'come to me, stand here, then go on', will your devotees not ask, 'who is this fellow who claims to come from you?'

Explanation

At Perunthurai the Lord took Manikkavasagar as his own and then vanished with his devotees, leaving him alone. That pain runs through many verses of the Thiruvasagam. 'I have fallen behind' is its voice. The other devotees have gone with the Lord, and I alone am left behind.

So he asks for one simple sign: a single word, 'come'. Without it, he fears, the company of devotees will ask who he is. It is a tender plea, like a child asking its mother, 'tell everyone I am yours.'

Periya Puranam (Sekkizhar), the life of Thirunalaippovar Nayanar

Nandanar, Who Longed to See Thillai

Nandanar of Adhanur, a farm labourer, loved Siva deeply. He gave leather and straps for temple drums and worshipped from outside the temples, singing and dancing. His heart had one longing: to go to Thillai and see the Lord dancing in the Hall.

But the landlord he worked for would not let him go. Every day he said 'I will go tomorrow', and so he came to be called Thirunalaippovar, 'the one who will go tomorrow'. Many mocked him, but his longing never faded. In the end the landlord himself was moved by his love and let him go. Tradition tells that at Thiruppunkur, when the Nandi blocked his view of the Lord, the Lord himself told Nandi to move aside.

When he reached Thillai, at the Lord's command he entered a sacred fire and rose in the pure form of a sage, and with the brahmins walking beside him he entered the Hall and merged with the Lord. The same longing Manikkavasagar sings in Koyil Mootha Thiruppathigam, 'I have fallen behind', 'have pity so that I may see your court', filled Nandanar's whole life. The Lord never leaves such longing unanswered.
