Meaning

I kept thinking, again and again, 'the Dancer of the Hall will take pity on us', and I was left waiting in vain. Yet you taught me the rare path and ruled me. Shall I now wander like an ox with no master? Graciously say 'come, life of ours', so that I may come near the place where you and your close devotees stand shining and at play.

Explanation

The image of 'an ox with no master' comes from village life. An ox without an owner wanders everywhere, strays into anyone's field and gets beaten. Hidden here is the Saiva Siddhanta teaching of pati, pasu and pasam: if the soul (pasu, literally 'cattle') is not ruled by the Lord (pati), it wanders through the fields of bondage (pasam) and suffers.

The word 'play' is lovely too. All the Lord's acts are lila, divine play. Manikkavasagar wants to join that play.

Periya Puranam (Sekkizhar), the life of Thirunalaippovar Nayanar

Nandanar, Who Longed to See Thillai

Nandanar of Adhanur, a farm labourer, loved Siva deeply. He gave leather and straps for temple drums and worshipped from outside the temples, singing and dancing. His heart had one longing: to go to Thillai and see the Lord dancing in the Hall.

But the landlord he worked for would not let him go. Every day he said 'I will go tomorrow', and so he came to be called Thirunalaippovar, 'the one who will go tomorrow'. Many mocked him, but his longing never faded. In the end the landlord himself was moved by his love and let him go. Tradition tells that at Thiruppunkur, when the Nandi blocked his view of the Lord, the Lord himself told Nandi to move aside.

When he reached Thillai, at the Lord's command he entered a sacred fire and rose in the pure form of a sage, and with the brahmins walking beside him he entered the Hall and merged with the Lord. The same longing Manikkavasagar sings in Koyil Mootha Thiruppathigam, 'I have fallen behind', 'have pity so that I may see your court', filled Nandanar's whole life. The Lord never leaves such longing unanswered.
