Meaning

You do not dance for the feet of the Lord of the dance; you have no love for him; you do not sing until your bones melt; you do not throb, you do not bow; you do not wear his flower feet on your head, nor adorn them with flowers. O heart, a lifeless corpse with no companion! You do not search for him, you do not cry out in every street. I do not know what to do.

Explanation

The fourth ten are called 'Athuma Suddhi', purifying the soul. Its first step is to see one's own failings openly. Piling up nine 'you do not's, the poet scolds his heart for lacking every act of love. All ten verses of this section share one metre.

'You do not cry out in every street' recalls devotees who wandered like madmen in search of the Lord. Karaikkal Ammaiyar climbed Kailasa walking on her head. Such longing is the fire that purifies the soul.

Thiruvathavurar Puranam of Kadavul Mamunivar; Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam of Paranjothi Munivar

Left Alone Beneath the Kurundha Tree

Vathavurar, chief minister of the Pandya king, set out with royal gold to buy horses. At Perunthurai he saw a guru seated beneath a kurundha tree, surrounded by devotees. The moment the guru placed his foot on Vathavurar's head in initiation, the minister forgot himself. His post, the king's errand and the gold in his care no longer mattered. Songs poured from his lips like gems, and the guru named him Manikkavasagar, 'he whose words are rubies'.

For a time he lived with the guru and his devotees. Then one day the guru called the devotees and said, 'A fire will rise in that pond. Plunge into it and come to me.' Turning to Manikkavasagar, he said, 'You stay here and raise this temple; afterwards come to Thillai.' And he vanished. The devotees all entered that light and merged with the Lord. Manikkavasagar alone was left standing on the bank.

With his guru and companions gone, he fell senseless, rolled on the ground and wept: 'Why did you leave me behind?' Thiruchathagam was born from the pain of that parting. Lines such as 'were there no other devotees?', 'falsehood and I were left outside' and 'you and your devotees went there and set me here' are memories of that day. Later the king imprisoned him, and the Lord rescued him by turning jackals into horses, flooding the Vaigai and taking a blow of the cane while carrying earth for its banks. At last Manikkavasagar merged with the Lord at Thillai. Thiruchathagam is the first cry of that long journey.

To reflect on

When did you last truly search for God, or for the highest thing you believe in?
