Meaning

No celestial can measure him, yet he is easy for his devotees. He cut away our deceit and stood and ruled us; you knew this and melted at the thought of it. Even so, O heart, you did not turn in anger on the faults within you, think of him, and make your heart a wide dwelling for him. Nor did you cut away your blemishes and bow at the feet of the Owner, so as to enter the highest state.

Explanation

'Hard for the gods, easy for the devotees' is a pairing found all through Thiruvasagam. The one beyond the reach of gods with power and knowledge is within reach of devotees who have only love.

'Making the heart a wide dwelling' is a lovely image. The Lord needs room to stay, and for that the rubbish inside must be cleared out. Purifying the soul means making room for God.

Thiruvathavurar Puranam of Kadavul Mamunivar; Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam of Paranjothi Munivar

Left Alone Beneath the Kurundha Tree

Vathavurar, chief minister of the Pandya king, set out with royal gold to buy horses. At Perunthurai he saw a guru seated beneath a kurundha tree, surrounded by devotees. The moment the guru placed his foot on Vathavurar's head in initiation, the minister forgot himself. His post, the king's errand and the gold in his care no longer mattered. Songs poured from his lips like gems, and the guru named him Manikkavasagar, 'he whose words are rubies'.

For a time he lived with the guru and his devotees. Then one day the guru called the devotees and said, 'A fire will rise in that pond. Plunge into it and come to me.' Turning to Manikkavasagar, he said, 'You stay here and raise this temple; afterwards come to Thillai.' And he vanished. The devotees all entered that light and merged with the Lord. Manikkavasagar alone was left standing on the bank.

With his guru and companions gone, he fell senseless, rolled on the ground and wept: 'Why did you leave me behind?' Thiruchathagam was born from the pain of that parting. Lines such as 'were there no other devotees?', 'falsehood and I were left outside' and 'you and your devotees went there and set me here' are memories of that day. Later the king imprisoned him, and the Lord rescued him by turning jackals into horses, flooding the Vaigai and taking a blow of the cane while carrying earth for its banks. At last Manikkavasagar merged with the Lord at Thillai. Thiruchathagam is the first cry of that long journey.
