Declaration of Love"s special Excellence · Kaadharsirappuraiththal

This chapter shows the lover and his beloved each declaring the special excellence of their love, joining it to the body, the soul, the eye and the heart. Valluvar presents love as an inseparable unity, a bond that stays in the heart whatever the village may say.

Introduction

This is the second chapter of the Kalaviyal in the book of love. In the first chapter the lover marvelled at the beauty of his beloved; here both of them sing of what makes their love special. The word sirappu means distinction, excellence. Love, the chapter says, is no mere attraction. It takes root in the depth of the heart and alters everything, from the food one eats to the lid one blinks. Valluvar lets two voices alternate here. In the first five verses the man speaks, in the next five the woman. Both show the same truth in different pictures.

In the man's voice we hear the sweetness and inseparability of love. Its sweetness is like milk mingled with honey; the friendship is that of body and soul; she is an image living in the pupil of his eye; near her he lives and away from her he dies; and he cannot forget her. His love deepens step by step. The woman's voice is subtler. Because he lives in her eyes and heart, she does not paint her eyes, does not eat hot food, and fears even to blink. Finally, when the village slanders him as hard-hearted, she is hurt, but she insists that he dwells in her heart always. There is a fine paradox here: real closeness is not displayed outwardly, it stays within.

The tone may seem overwrought. The reasons given for not applying kohl or for avoiding hot food hardly satisfy reason. But they are not measures of fact; they are poetic ways of conveying the intensity of feeling. They depict how deeply love alters even the smallest daily acts. In the chapters to come, when love becomes public and trouble arises, this basic affection is the seed.

For today the meaning goes deep. In an age when relationships begin quickly and end quickly, the chapter reminds us what is needed to be joined like body and soul: remembering, being bound by respect, and a firmness that does not sway at what others say. The love Valluvar shows is no display; it is a quiet lamp burning within.

Chapter story

The Lord Who Stood as Two in One

This is the story of Ardhanarishvara as told in the Shaiva Puranas. On Mount Kailasa, Lord Shiva and Mother Uma sat side by side. There lived the great ascetic Bhringi, who had resolved to worship Shiva alone. It was his habit to circumambulate Shiva and pass Uma by. One day, when he came to worship, the two were seated close together. Taking the form of a bee, he entered between Shiva and Uma and tried to circle Shiva alone.

Seeing this, the Mother smiled gently. She drew closer into Shiva's lap so that there was no space left for the bee. Bhringi did not give up; he tried to bore through even the narrow gap between them. Then the Mother thought, "He must be shown that he cannot function without my shakti," and she withdrew her power from the sage's body. The Purana says that the strength which sustains flesh and blood in a person is a form of shakti. When she withdrew it, the sage collapsed like a skeleton and fell.

Seeing the stricken sage, Shiva felt compassion and gave him a staff to lean on. When the sage rose, he understood the glory of the Mother, bowed and asked her pardon for his mistake. After that Uma joined the left half of Shiva's body and took the form of Ardhanarishvara, as the Purana relates. One half male, one half female: one body, one life.

In Tamil Nadu the Ardhanarishvara temple on the hill at Tiruchengode is renowned. Couples who worship there pray that they will stand together firmly in life. The Ardhanarishvara form is honoured as an ideal of married life. The story shows that life becomes complete only when husband and wife honour each other.

As the lover says in the verse, their bond is like the friendship of body and soul. There is no body without life, no life without body. This form of Shiva and Shakti united displays that truth in majesty.

Another charm of the tale is that the form of Shiva and Shakti standing as one is found in countless places in temple sculpture and painting. On the right side are matted locks and a crescent, on the left side flowing hair and kumkum. Each half keeps its own beauty, and together the two shine as a single beauty.

A couple today who reflect on this story can learn to respect each other's strength. Both must take part in success; a relationship in which only one stands forward is incomplete. This is the story's own message. The special excellence of love, too, lies in union.
