Explanation

The charm of this verse lies in a logical puzzle. The lover says: I would remember her virtues, but I could remember only if I had forgotten; I who do not know forgetting have no need to remember. Only one who has forgotten a thing has to recall it. Because he never forgets her, there is no room for the act of remembering; she is always in his mind. Her memory has become an unbroken activity like breathing.

Olamarkkan means bright, warlike eyes, indicating the keenness of her glance. But what the lover keeps in memory is not only her beauty; the word gunam refers to her virtues. Beauty may fade, but virtue stays in the mind. Her affection, modesty, humility and wisdom are what he treasures. So this is no memory of mere attraction but a memory of esteem.

In our own lives we meet people we cannot forget. We do not remember them by effort; it happens by itself. The good they did us, the way they behaved and the words they spoke do not leave us. Such memory arises only where we respect a person. The verse also makes us reflect on what kind of memory we leave in others.

A story

Sita in the Ashoka Grove

The Sundara Kanda of the Ramayana shows Sita held captive in the Ashoka grove. Ravana had abducted her, brought her to Lanka and kept her in the grove under the watch of rakshasis. One day Ravana came and pleaded, "Marry me and be queen of Lanka." Sita placed a blade of grass between them and spoke to him. In her heart the memory of Rama never dimmed.

The rakshasis frightened her. Only Trijata, a kind-hearted rakshasi, showed her affection. Whenever Sita grieved over her state, she found comfort by recalling Rama's face, his words and his virtues. Day and night made little difference to her; the memory of Rama alone was her companion.

At that time Hanuman came to Lanka looking for Sita. Hiding in a tree he saw her condition. He heard her lips murmuring Rama's name again and again. When he dropped Rama's ring into her lap, her face lit up. She wept at the sight of the ring. "Tell my lord that I am alive here," she said to Hanuman, the songs relate.

Would Sita need to remember only after forgetting? The memory of Rama burned constantly in her heart. In it were not only Rama's looks but his righteousness, his love and his promise. That is why she did not lose hope however much suffering came.

The story shows that an unforgettable memory is a support in the hardest days of life. The memory of a virtue firmly planted in the heart is a lamp even in darkness.
