Explanation

The woman's voice begins with this verse. In the first five verses the man praised his beloved as life, body and eye; now she speaks of him. For her he lives within her eyes. Whether she opens or closes them, he does not leave. The word nunniyar means that his form is very small, and also hints at a delicate, gentle nature. Being so fine, he is not crushed when the eyelids close; no hurt comes to him.

Commentators differ somewhat over the word paruguvaraa. Some read it as "he is not hurt," others see other shades of meaning. But the central idea is one: he is within her eyes. Even when she does not see him, his form stands in her eye, and when she shuts her eyes the same form appears to the inner sight. This subtle fancy shows how deeply she has taken him in.

Such love is found today as well. Couples long separated pass their days thinking of each other. To feel someone within you without a picture, without a voice, is a mature stage of affection. Valluvar puts it sweetly. A loving bond remains in us not only when we see the person but when we do not.

A story

Andal and Her Lord

In Srivilliputhur, Periyalvar found a baby girl in his tulasi garden, named her Godai and raised her. She became Andal. From childhood, the thought of Ranganatha was her very life. A well-known story in the Vaishnava tradition is that when she wove the garland meant for the Lord, she would first wear it, look at herself in the mirror and then send it to the temple. The Lord let Periyalvar know in a dream that he accepted precisely the garland she had worn, and so she became known as the one who wears and gives the garland.

In her hymns the Lord stands always in her eyes and heart. In the Nachiyar Tirumozhi she sends clouds as messengers, talks to the cuckoo, and questions Krishna's conch with familiarity. The feeling in every song is that he is one who never leaves her eyes. When she closes them his form is still there; when she opens them she sees only him.

Seeing his daughter's heart fixed on the Lord, Periyalvar finally arranged for her to be wed to Ranganatha of Srirangam, tradition says. It is said she went to Srirangam in a palanquin, dressed in silk, and merged with the Lord. The faithful understand through devotion how she merged.

Andal's love is not that of married life, yet it is very close to the language the heroine speaks in the verse. The sense of him being within her eyes is the firmness to carry the Lord within even when he is not seen. Her Tiruppavai is sung even now in every home during the month of Margazhi.

What we learn is that true love is not for the eye alone; it glows in the mind even when the beloved is not seen. This applies also to elders we do not see daily yet honour in our hearts.
